While it’s a rough estimate, it is believed that about 90 percent of people in the world are right-handed. That puts lefties in the minority, at least in most walks of life. If you are a sports fan, you are likely well aware of some athletes who are left-handed. You can see it when they throw a ball or swing a bat. What about the left-handed celebrities who aren’t from the world of sports? Have you ever noticed how they pick up a coffee cup in a scene, or how they hold their instrument? Well here are some of the celebrity lefties you might not have known about.
1 of 25
Matt Groening
FOX
If you’ve ever watched “The Simpsons,” you might have figured out that Groening is left-handed. An unusually high number of Springfield’s denizens are southpaws, including Bart Simpson himself. So is Ned Flanders, who owned his own store for lefties, the Leftorium, for much of the show’s run.
2 of 25
Tom Cruise
Paramount
Cruise is one of the last remaining true movie stars. He’s also a lefty, so he knows what an impossible mission it can be for left handers to use scissors. Also a lefty? Cruise’s ex-wife, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman.
3 of 25
Julia Roberts
Columbia
Cruise may have been the biggest male movie star of the ‘90s, and Roberts may have been the top female star of that same decade. She’s a romantic comedy legend who eventually won an Oscar for “Erin Brokovich.” In “Pretty Woman,” did she try and grab that ring out of the ring box with her left hand?
4 of 25
Sylvester Stallone
MGM
Stallone has played an athlete, namely the boxer Rocky Balboa. There are certainly plenty of southpaws in the world of boxing, but even when he’s not donning Rocky’s trunk Stallone is primarily a left hand user.
5 of 25
Will Ferrell
Columbia
Ferrell is perfect at playing loudmouth idiots, be they newscasters, racecar drivers, or step brothers. The former “Saturday Night Live” star is a southpaw, including when he is playing the cowbell.
6 of 25
Keanu Reeves
Summit
Whoa. Reeves is a lefty? Yes, it’s true. Reeves has become one of our greatest action stars thanks to films like “The Matrix” trilogy or the “John Wick” films. To think, the Canada-raised actor could have just been yet another left-handed hockey player.
7 of 25
Jennifer Lawrence
20th Century Fox
Lawrence burst onto the scene with her turn in “Winter’s Bone” before becoming one of the biggest movie starts in the world. She won an Oscar for Best Actress when she was still in her early twenties, leaving her plenty of time to win another. Maybe she should steer clear of making movies about mops, though.
8 of 25
Tina Fey
NBC
In “30 Rock,” Jack Donaghy once commented on Liz Lemon’s left-handedness. It is a trait often associated with creativity, and Fey is certainly creative. The former “Saturday Night Live” head writer would go on to co-create the fantastic sitcoms “30 Rock” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”
9 of 25
Katharine Hepburn
MGM
Hepburn loved to golf, but you don’t know her for her swing. Hepburn is considered one of the best actors ever. In fact, her four Oscar wins for acting are an all-time record. Heck, Cate Blanchett even won an Oscar for playing Hepburn in “The Aviator.”
10 of 25
Bruce Willis
20th Century Fox
Willis doesn’t just moonlight as a lefty. We’re seeing southpaws here, as the action star (and harmonica enthusiast) is a lefty too. From “Die Hard” to that last “Die Hard” sequel people didn’t really need, we’ve spent a lot of time watching the left-handed Willis on our screens.
11 of 25
Hugh Jackman
20th Century Fox
Jackman can sing, dance, and act, but can he write legibly with his right hand? Probably not. This also means that Wolverine is probably a lefty, though he swung those adamantium claws quite ambidextrously as far as we’re concerned.
12 of 25
Mark Hamill
20th Century Fox
If you are a southpaw that plays baseball, you probably swing your bat left-handed. We assume that Luke Skywalker swings his light saber left-handed as well, given that the man who played him is a southpaw. Hamill is forever a sci-fi legend, and has become quite a successful voiceover actor as well.
13 of 25
Lisa Kudrow
NBC
There were many unusual things about Phoebe Buffay, Kudrow’s character from “Friends.” Being left-handed is probably not first on the list. However, when Phoebe was strumming “Smelly Cat,” the woman playing her was a southpaw.
14 of 25
Seth Rogen
Summit
Rogen has been acting since he was a kid, and has grown into a legitimate movie star in adulthood. While he’s mostly known for comedy, and broad comedy at that, he’s not a bad dramatic actor either. Also, does the notoriously weed-friendly Rogen hold his joints with his left hand as well?
15 of 25
Cary Grant
MGM
From the goofy stoner Rogen we go to the dashing, debonair Grant. Although, Grant famously was a proponent of therapeutic use of LSD. That being said, he’s not primarily known for that. The man born Archibald Leach is a legendary actor of a bygone era, including starring alongside fellow lefty Katharine Hepburn.
16 of 25
Judy Garland
MGM
People who are left-handed are often “left footed” as well. If they were to play soccer, they’d probably be booting that ball with their left foot. We don’t know if Garland ever played soccer, but the lefty still has some famous feet. They were once in an iconic pair of ruby red slippers when she starred as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.”
17 of 25
Robert De Niro
Warner Bros.
Speaking of actors who played boxers, De Niro did just that in “Raging Bull.” Of course, that’s just one of many iconic roles in the actors career. He’s been a critical darling since the ‘70s, though his work has gotten a little shaggier as he’s gotten older. That is, until he found some of his old acting chops in his reunion with Martin Scorsese, “The Irishman.”
18 of 25
Oprah Winfrey
NBC
Oprah needs no introduction. Heck, she doesn’t even need a last name. She’s one of the most successful celebrities in the world. Her media empire has made her millions of dollars many times over. While she is no longer doing the daytime television thing, Oprah remains famous, influential, and left-handed.
19 of 25
Jimi Hendrix
Warner Bros.
Yes, arguably the greatest guitarist of all time was in fact a lefty. This led to him having to practice some ingenuity when it came to the tools of his trade. Instead of using a left-handed guitar, Hendrix would string right-handed guitars upside down. Clearly it worked for him.
20 of 25
Lady Gaga
Warner Bros.
A star was born in Lady Gaga many years before she starred in “A Star is Born.” You know who starred in a previous version of that same story? None other than Gaga’s fellow lefty Garland. Whether she’s acting or making music, Gaga is a southpaw.
21 of 25
David Bowie
TriStar
If you want to argue that lefties are creative, Bowie is a great person to point to. In addition to his incredible musical career, Bowie was always reinventing his look and coming up with personas. Ziggy Stardust was a lefty. So was the Thin White Duke and Aladdin Sane. Through it all, Bowie was making great music and being left-handed.
22 of 25
Justin Bieber
Open Road
Bieber may not be everybody’s cup of Tim Horton’s coffee, but for a certain generation he’s a superstar. When he was still a teen, the lefty was a beloved pop star. He’s continued his career in adulthood, but Bieber Fever never seems to be coming back.
23 of 25
Kurt Cobain
NBC
Cobain helped change the face of popular music with his band Nirvana. While we don’t know if he ever pulled a Hendrix and strung a right-handed guitar upside down, he was a lefty guitarist as well. Though his career was cut short by his world-shaking suicide, the legacy of Nirvana changed the landscape of music.
24 of 25
Paul McCartney
United Artists
Speaking of changing music, McCartney was one of two lefties in the Beatles. Drummer Ringo Star was also a southpaw. The Beatles became one of the biggest bands of all time in both England and the United States, and McCartney is one of the most-loved musicians ever. Score one for the lefties.
25 of 25
Jim Henson
PBS
We’ll end with Henson because of how much his hands were used in his work. Henson is probably the most-famous puppeteer ever. He created the Muppets and was the original puppeteer and voice actor for characters like Kermit the Frog. Henson died far too young, but the Muppets live on. Hopefully some of the current puppeteer are lefties like Henson himself.
