Can Your RV Pull the Carrier? (all the numbers you require)
Golf carts typically weigh around 900 pounds. When you consider the weight of the golf cart’s carrier, you may be wondering if your motorhome is capable of towing that much weight.
To understand how much your motorhome can tow, you must first understand a few key terms and what they mean in terms of towing capacity.
First and foremost, we have the Maximum Towing Capacity.
The Maximum Towing Capacity of your motorhome is typically found in the chassis information and specifications.
If you can’t find this information, you can figure it out by knowing your vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and Gross Combined Weight Rating and doing some math.
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of your motorhome indicates how much weight it can carry, including the chassis, engine, fluids, passengers, accessories, and cargo. This figure, however, does not include the towing capacity of your motorhome.
This number is typically located inside the driver’s door, alongside all tire pressure specifications and information.
Then you’ll need the Gross Combined Weight Rating, which is the sum of the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (the combined weight of the chassis, engine, passengers, cargo, and so on) and the Maximum Towing Capacity.
The Gross Combined Weight Rating can also be found with the information and specifications for your motorhome chassis.
To calculate the Maximum Towing Capacity, simply subtract the total Gross Vehicle Weight Rating from the Gross Combined Weight Rating.
The Hitch Weight Rating is the next number you should double-check before towing a golf cart carrier behind your RV (this number specifies how much weight your towing package is capable of pulling). The Hitch Weight Rating can be found on the back of your motorhome near the hitch.
If the Hitch Weight Rating is less than the Maximum Towing Capacity, always use the Hitch Weight Rating number instead.
DO NOT USE THAT NUMBER IF THE Hitch Weight Rating claims it can tow more than the Maximum Towing Capacity that we calculated earlier!
This is extremely dangerous and could result in serious damage to your motorhome, cart carrier, golf cart, and YOU!
